an online and pop-up bookshop in Portland, OR that specializes in stories by and about people from historically marginalized communities, across genres and ages.

I don’t know about y’all, but the last few weeks have been rough. So many personal tragedies and losses in our little world, not to mention the tragedies on a national and global scale. It’s been a lot. In the midst of everything, a lot of bookstore things have fallen to the wayside. Thank you for your patience while we adjusted hours, cancelled an event last minute, and have been pretty quiet. We’re tending to our hearts as best we can.

In this almost unbearable season, the one thing we keep coming back to is the power of community. Thank you to everyone who has checked in on us, sent us an encouraging note, or just shared some love. It has really meant a lot. Keep holding tight and caring for one another, friends. It really does make a difference.

Please enjoy these sweet pics of our big gal, Frankie, who passed away February 26 after about 10 yrs of thrashing, moping, lounging, and loving so very deeply. I picked two hiking pics, but her favorite place was being on the couch with her people.

April Book Club Pick 📚

The votes are in! In April, we will be reading and discussing the Monk & Robot novella duology by Becky Chambers. The duology includes two novellas: A Psalm for the Wild-Built and A Prayer for the Crown-Shy.

A little about the book: Becky Chambers' delightful, post-Utopian, Hugo Award-winning series gives us hope for the future. It's been centuries since the robots of Panga gained self-awareness and laid down their tools; centuries since they wandered, en masse, into the wilderness, never to be seen again; centuries since they faded into myth and urban legend. One day, the life of a tea monk is upended by the arrival of a robot, there to honor the old promise of checking in. The robot cannot go back until the question of "what do people need?" is answered. But the answer to that question depends on who you ask, and how. They're going to need to ask it a lot.

Becky Chambers' series asks: in a world where people have what they want, does having more matter?

We’ll meet virtually April 8th @ 6pm on Discord and in person April 12th @ 4:30pm at our microstore inside Hungry Heart (414 SE 80th Ave).

We have copies of the trade paperback edition with both stories in stock at the shop for 10% off. If you prefer to order editions with each story separately (maybe you already have one), then send us an email and we’d love to special order it for you! Of course, they are also available from the library and bookshop.org.

What is bringing you joy and comfort right now, friends? For me, time in community and all forms of art are helping soften the harshness of the world. Some of our good friends are always inviting us to create art when we’re in their home, and while I struggle to create, the other day I just doodled and colored and it was very therapeutic. I hope you create something today and feel connected to yourself, community, and the world. We’re so glad you’re here. Sending you love and light.

In solidarity,

zo (and mags)
